Ronnie graduated from Savanna High School in 1966. He then joined and served in the U.S. Navy during Viet Nam, receiving the Purple Heart. He graduated from Eastern Oklahoma State College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in business. He married Paula Cheney in September 2003 in Las Vegas. He worked as a Level II radiographer for the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant for 37 years, retiring in 2003. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, riding four wheelers and playing golf. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098, and was of the Baptist faith. He passed awy at Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee at the age of 62. Survivors include his wife, Paula Weiher Smith, of the home; sons, Christopher Lee Smith, of Quinton, and Brian Simmons, of McAlester; daughters, Leslie Simmons and husband, Rodney, of Savanna, and Paula Gaskins and husband, Mike, of Edmond. Also, grandchildren, Joshua Holloway and Jacob Holloway, of Savanna, Hollie Bridges and Carson Hoffman, of Edmond, and Cadence Simmons and Raelyn Barlow, of McAlester. And, brother, W.L. Smith and wife, Mary Lou, of Weleetka; sisters, Billie Dean Copeland and husband, Welton, of Bethel, Katie Graham and husband, Hershel, Carlsbad, N.M., and Patricia Harris and husband, the Rev. James, of Savanna. And, sister-in-law, Lynn Smith, of Savanna; the mother of his children, Carolyn Nelson, of McAlester, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mable Smith; a sister, Betty Marlow, and a brother, James Smith. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Terry Trivitt officiating. Burial will be at Savanna Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United State Navy. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Jim Owens, Donnie Meadows, Dennis Tarron, Larry Lame, Ron Martin and Rodney Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be McAAP X-Ray personnel, Leon Cable, O. J. Foutch, Jim Weiher, Brian Simmons, Mike Gaskins, Kenney Morgan and Sonny Hoover.
