Benjamin F. Klees
Berwick WWII veteran traveled the U.S.
Benjamin F. Klees, formerly of Berwick, passed away Saturday afternoon, Dec. 25, 2010, at Maria Hall in Danville, where he was a hospice patient.
He was born Nov. 21, 1918, in rural Catawissa, and was a son of the late Charles H. Klees and Laura A. Fahringer Klees.
He graduated from Locust Township High School in 1936.
Ben was a World War II veteran, serving as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945. After being honorably discharged, Ben worked as a long distance truck driver, a diesel mechanic, and was last employed at Milco Industries as part of the maintenance crew. He retired in 1991 at the age of 73.
Ben loved trains, especially old steam locomotives, and he also collected Hess trucks. He enjoyed traveling around the country and was proud that during his lifetime, he toured all 48 continental states.
He was preceded in death by his two wives: Mildred Thomas Klees in 1971, and Phyllis Dent Klees in 1997, and by a brother, Karl Klees in 1935.
He is survived by three children: Molly (Klees) Lukeski of Catawissa and her husband Charles; Nancy (Hontz) Garcia of Berwick and her husband Les, and Kenneth Hontz and his wife Hedwig, of Manheim, Pa.; three stepchildren: Richard Dent and his wife Jorja, of Berwick; Dennis Dent and his wife Joy, of Berwick, and Faye Michaloski and her husband Walter, of Middletown, Del.; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Warren Klees and his wife Grace, of Danville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family viewing was held Sunday. A memorial service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church in Berwick, on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Joseph Brady officiating. Friends will be received from 9 a.m. until time of the service. Interment will follow in New Rosemont Cemetery, Bloomsburg.
