Earnest Howard "Fergie" Ferguson was one of eight children born to John Henry Ferguson and Grace L. Wright. He was born in Harriman, Tennessee on July 13, 1918. He was known as Fergie by his family, but most knew him as Howard. He proudly served in the US Air Force.

His siblings were: Ralph Edward Ferguson, Gladys Ferguson (Cotter), Geraldine Ferguson (McKinney), Willis Hubert "WH" Ferguson, Thelma Jo Ferguson, Betty Jean Ferguson (Hancock), and Shirley Jeanette Ferguson (Cook).
