Sophia was born in Alpen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, the sixth of nine children of Johann Wilhelm Baumann and Maria Margarete Overfeld. She immigrated to Wisconsin with her parents and surviving siblings, two brothers and four sisters, in 1872.

She was the mother of William, Richard, Katharina, Henrietta, Margaret (Gretchen), and three children who died in infancy: Gerhard, Wilhelm, and Margarethe. Her death certificate states she died of a cerebral hemorrhage after many years of nephritis.

Her obituary in the Kaukauna Sun, dated October 10, 1912, read as follows:

"Mrs. Sophia Kamps; Appleton Crescent: Mrs. Sophia Kamps died Monday morning at the age of 63 years of apoplexy. The deceased was born in Alton [sic], Rhine Prussia in 1849, and came to this country with her parents direct to Appleton in 1872. She had been ailing for several years and was not able to be about. She leaves two brothers, William and August Baumann of Appleton: four sisters Mrs. Gertrude Croell of Potsdam, New York, Mrs. Elizabeth Croell, and the Misses Agnes and Anna Baumann of Appleton: three children, William Kamps, Mrs. Joseph Plank, and Miss Gretchen Kamps, of Appleton; 3 step children. Mrs John J. Sherman; H.A. Kamps and Theodore Kamps, Appleton. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 9:00 from St. Joseph's Church."
