Elma passed away at age 94 in her home at sunrise on Sunday, July 27, 2008 after a short illness. She was born on December 18, 1913 in Standish, Lassen, California to charles Eli and Hattie Calista Lybarger Hooks. She was the baby of six children. Elma was raised in the high desert area of Northern California and came to Utah with her father in a Model T Ford when she was fourteen years old. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1932.
Elma married Raymond Harrison Brooks and had a son Richard H. (Dixie) Brooks. She was widowed when Richard was nine months old. She then met and married Clarence Herman "Sparky" Everts who became an instant proud father to Richard. Soon after came Larry Everts, followed by Carol Everts May, Holly Everts Hunter, and Tim (Karen) Everts. Elma was widdowed in 1977 after 39 years of marriage, but soon renewed a an old friendship and married Floyd Julius Bentz who passed away in 1981.
Elma has 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grand children and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her three husbands, three grandchildren (Ricky Brooks, Dirk Brooks and Keith Everts), a daughter-in-law (Janice Golden Everts), her brothers (Glenn, Charles and Jack) and sisters (Elsie Shaw and Lena Shaw).
Elma and her mother were converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has been a very active member for many years, most recently in the Washington Terrace 2nd Ward. She was active in temple work and was responsible for ordinaces for her deceased family.
Elma was my mother's very good friend and member of the Friendly Club. She helped me to get through a very hard time in my life and I greatly miss her.
