ROSEVILLE — John Harold Beard, 98, of Roseville gained his heavenly reward on April 28, 2016, at Roseville Rehab and Healthcare in Roseville. Harold was born Dec. 4, 1917 in Roseville Township, the son of Walter Scott and Beulah (Fischer) Beard. He married M. June Kinsey on June 6, 1948 in Roseville.
Harold graduated from Roseville High School and served in the U.S. Army (European Front) for nearly five years during World War II. He attended Mississippi State College in training for a period of time during those years. His unit was at one of the Nazi concentration camps just after it was liberated, and this experience made a lasting impression on him. After the war, he returned to Warren County and farmed southeast of Roseville until his retirement. He raised purebred Angus cattle. In addition, he drove a school bus for Roseville Unit Schools for 20 years and served as custodian at the Roseville Elementary and Junior High School. Later, he was Maintenance Supervisor at the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.
Harold and June enjoyed traveling to see the United States and visiting friends and family in many of the places they went. Many missionaries and Christian workers enjoyed hospitality in their home through the years. They had a large garden every summer and shared the bounty with others. Harold loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and wanted them to experience the good life on the farm. When mobility issues began interfering with his other activities, he enjoyed playing solitaire on the computer, reading magazines and articles relating to farming, and doing word search puzzles.
Harold was a member and former elder at Roseville Christian Church, where he served as Board Chairman and Secretary, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and, until two years ago, was a member of Missions Committee. Seeing his family members accept Jesus as Savior and serve Him with their lives was his main goal in life. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0614 Lawson Babbitt Post. He was active in the Warren County Farm Bureau, serving on the Farm Bureau State Marketing Committee and Warren County Farm Bureau Board. He served as a 4-H Club Leader in Warren County and served on the Warren County 4-H Committee and as the Warren County Fair Poultry Superintendent and City Farm Day President. He was a member of the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District Board, Community National Bank Advisory Board, Western Illinois Campus Evangelism Board, LaMoine Christian Service Camp Board, Swan Township Board, Warren County Historical Society Board, and the Roseville Rehab and Healthcare Center Auxiliary.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Judy (Harold) Horn of Normal, and Deanna (John) Walker of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; grandchildren, Nathan (Tara) Horn of Normal; David (Jennifer) Horn of Queen Creek, Ariz.; Hope (Brett) Karabensh of Cedar Park, Texas; Charity (Todd) Byers of Palm Harbor, Fla.; great grandchildren, Noah, Olivia, Riley and Karaden Horn and Caden and Trevor Karabensh; sister Betty Gayman of Schertz, Texas; brother-in-law. Bill Kinsey of Arenzville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Scott Beard, and two sisters Mary Bycroft and Pauline Bycroft.
A funeral service will be Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. with James Oliver and Jack Wingate officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Roseville Memorial Park Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded at the grave by the Roseville American Legion. Memorials may be left to the Roseville Christian Church. Please sign the online guestbook at wisefamily-hooverhall.com.
