Sylvester Brown Stephenson was the son of Samuel and Mary Shields Stephenson. He was born in Limestone County,Alabama,in 1837.

Sylvester Brown Stephenson married Mary A. Holt in Limestone County,Alabama in 1857.

He died in Waxahachie,Ellis County,Texas at 3:30 o'clock in the morning on April 7,1908. His funeral service was held at the residence of his daughter Mrs. W.H. Smith on Wednesday,April 8,1908 at 10:00 o'clock. Interment was in the City Cemetery. Members of Winnie Davis Confederate Camp 108 attended the service. There is no gravestone.

According to his application for the Confederate Southern Cross, Sylvester entered the service of the Confederate States in November of 1861 as a private in Ward's Artillery,Company 2 in Madison County,Alabama. He was honorably discharged from the service by termination of the war and at the time of surrender he was with the 27th Tennessee Cavalry on May 12,1865.
