Benny was born May 18, 1919 in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Alvin Leroy Goodwin and Hazel Hemenway Goodwin. He attended Central Jr. High School and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. He continued his education at Idaho State University, Utah State University, the University of Nevada-Reno, Washington State University, and University of Wisconsin.
He served in the United States Army Air Force as a Captain during World War II. During his military service, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944.
Benny married Naida Larsen on January 14, 1944, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They were later divorced. He lived in Idaho Falls the last ten years, and has also lived in Los Angeles, CA; Ogden, UT; Pullman, WA; Teheran, Iran for 20 years, and Grants Pass, Oregon, for 30 years.
He worked as a professor at the University of Nevada-Reno and at Utah State University, for the United Nations, and was a Food and Agriculture Specialist. He had the opportunity to travel the world and at age 61 he climbed the highest mountain in the Arabian Peninsula at 12,098 feet.
Benny was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Scout Master for 10 years. He enjoyed hiking, camping, photography, woodworking, reading, watching high school basketball, and genealogy.
He is survived by his children:
Son: Dayne Goodwin of Salt Lake City, UT;
Daughter: Susan Goodwin of Cody, WY;
Son: Russell Goodwin of Logan, UT;
Son: Jay (Erin McConnell-Goodwin)Goodwin of Baker City, OR;
Son: Rick (Becky) Goodwin of Ammon, ID;
5 grandchildren: Lydia, Tyson, Riley, Courtney, and Tanner
Brother: Dale Goodwin of Ogden, UT;
Sister: Berna Telford of St. George, UT.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chuck Goodwin.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 27, 2010, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, with his son, Rick Goodwin, officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
