"15-year-old Ada Paintin (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Paintin of Coralville, a town just west of Iowa City) set a world record throwing a ball 187 feet. It happened Aug. 14, 1910 at the Black Springs baseball park as part of a day of baseball to benefit the Sawyer Hose company. The Iowa City team played a team from Rock Island, Ill., after Paintin's record toss. In previewing Paintin's record attempt, the Citizen wrote, "This is an entirely novel event and will doubtless attract a large crowd."
(Note--this was the mystery person question on Almanac, the Twin Cities Public TV show for September 13, 2013).
