Mr. Alva Abston, 81, Florence, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at ECM Hospital after an extended illness.Mr. Abston was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College and Peabody College, Nashville. He taught math and chemistry at Lexington High School and later worked as a chemist at the Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal, retiring in 1979.He had served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was an avid gardener.The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at Elkins Funeral Home chapel, with W.E. Hamblen officiating. Entombment will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.Mr. Abston is survived by his wife, Edrie Williams Abston; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry W. and Linda Virginia Tomlinson Abston, Lucas, Texas; and a sister, Della Holcomb, Florence.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tennessee Orphans Home, Springhill, Tenn.
