John Tucker was 25, and living in Henry Co., Iowa, when he was elected as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. D, 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 2, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861.

He was severely wounded in the right thigh on Jan 8, 1862, near Marianna, Arkansas.

Tucker was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on Jan 23, 1863.

He died of "congestive chills" on July 19, 1863, at Milldale, Mississippi, near Vicksburg.
