Joseph D. Coomes, 82, of 727 Walnut St., died at 2 a.m. Monday [March 18, 1968] at the Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital, after a short illness. A native of Daviess County, he was born April 18, 1885, and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and the Holy Name Society. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mattie Coomes; four sons, Jack of Vincennes, IN, Conroy of Rockport, IN, Gerald & Thomas, both of Owensboro; eight daughters, Mrs. Virgil Higdon of Curdsville, Mrs. James Cable of Hammond, IN, Mrs. Frank Brafchak of Medina, OH, Mrs. Donald Sharpton of Dewey, OK, Mrs. Tom Dant of St. Joseph, Mrs. John Howard and Mrs. Fred Powers, both of Owensboro, and Sister Cecilia, SCN, Whitesville; 49 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister, Mrs. Laura Dishman of Owensboro. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Celebrant at the solemn requiem high Mass will be the Very Rev. Anthony G. Higdon, pastor, the Rev. Clark Field, deacon, and the Rev. John Bartolomucci, TOR, subdeacon. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers. The body is at Haley McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today.
