Nicknamed "Farmer", he was the son of Gibson G. Gallagher and Mary Ann (Leonard) Gallagher. In 1880 he moved with his parents and siblings from Glandorf, Ohio to Dickens, Clay County, Iowa. He married Sarah Loretta Lincoln, daughter of George Washington Lincoln and Hannah Caroline (Faulkner) Lincoln, on 3 September 1896 at Spencer, Clay County, IA. In the very early 1900's John, Sarah and children moved to Hebron, Morton County, North Dakota where they purchased a farm. In the early 1920's they moved to St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota and eventually to Zimmerman, Sherburne County, Minnesota.

He was a blacksmith and owned a shop in Belfield, North Dakota.

John and Sarah had 7 children -- William Albert, James Louis, Mary Caroline, Fred John, Mabel Elvira, Nettie Frieda (aka Peggy) and my grandfather George Washington Gallagher.
