John Spaulding was the son of Ephraim and Sarah (Self) Spaulding. He was born in Alabama, either Blount or Walker County. He married Sarah Jane Lauderdale, in Blount County, Alabama. Sarah was the daughter of Sarah Bradford and 2nd wife of John's father Ephraim. This made John the step brother as well as husband of "Jane".

They came to Randolph County Arkansas around 1867, finally settling in Randolph County.

Some of the children are buried in the White Cemetery.
