John Hunnicutt, 76, who resided on a farm near the South Liberty church, died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday at the Wells county hospital. Death was attributed to pneumonia and complications following an illness of a week. Born in Jackson County, Wells County, Mar. 4, 1870, he was a son of Neri and Elizabeth Baker Hunnicutt. He was married Dec. 15, 1897 to Laura Jackson, who survives. Mr. Hunnicutt was a lifelong resident of Wells County and was active in church affairs, having served many years as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of Mt. Zion. Surviving besides the widow are three daughters, Mrs. Rosa Ruhle, and Mrs. Mary Houtz, both of Warren, Mrs. Ida Collins, of Bluffton; two sons, Charles Hunnicutt, of Muncie, Carl Hunnicutt, of Buckeye; a sister, Mrs. Eliza McElhaney, of Warren, and 19 grandchildren. A son, Everett and a daughter, Nellie, are deceased. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the South Liberty church in charge of Rev. Lester Howell. Burial will be in the Jones cemetery.----------

There was a good school and church located there which made a good place to raise a family. They had four girls and three boys. The Hunnicutt ancestors came form England and Scotland. Samuel, a Quaker minister, was our great-great-grandfather. He married Phearaby Block in Surrey County, Virginia, November 15, 1774. To this union our great-grandfather, Chappell was born September 11, 1807. Chappell became a herb doctor and as the Quakers migrated westward; he married Elizabeth Roberts in Clinton County, Ohio on September 11, 1840. They later moved to Wells County around 1850. Their children were: James, Ezra, Neri, Anthony, Sarah, Phearaby, Eliza, Samuel, Robert, Chappel, Lindsley, Cathlene, Ulyssis and Mary. Ezra and Neri served in the Civil War from Wells County. Neri was our grandfather, born July 25, 1842, died August 27, 1897, and he married Elizabeth Catherine Baker, daughter of John Baker, Jr., April 15, 1865. They resided in Jackson Township a few years before moving to South Liberty. Their children were: Sylvester, John, Elnora, Ida and James. Elizabeth died December 22, 1882 leaving Neri to raise a very young family with James being just three years old. Our grandfather, Neri, had been a farmer and at one time had a small drug store in Mt. Zion. Our father, John, was a farmer, hauled logs and oil well equipment and pulled oil wells with horses. He also found time to be janitor of the South Liberty Church for several years. Our mother's parents were Joseph L. Jackson and Mary A. Thompson. Her grandfather Hiram Jackson was perhaps the first white man to make a permanent residence in Liberty Township located one mile east and one mile south of Liberty Center. Mother started a subscription summer school a few years prior to her marriage at South Liberty. She didn't teach after she was married. They had seven children. Neri, born December 16, 1898, died December 4, 1900.Rosa married Clifford Ruble, a farmer, their children are Robert Ruble and Phyllis (Pond). Everett, born August 22, 1902, died October 18, 1918 of influenza. Charlie married Florence Musselman of Wells County. He owned a confectionery wholesale store in Muncie. Their children are: John Roger, Wayne, Janice (King), Willis and Jerry. Ida married John Collins, a salesman for Texaco Oil Co. Their children are: Billie, Sue (Poulson) and Ted. Carl married Mary Meade, January 12, 1929, daughter of William Patton and Elizabeth (Addington) Meade. In 1933, we settled four miles west of Liberty Center, in Buckeye where we had a general store for twenty years; along with a huckster wagon that served Wells and Huntington Counties. I also farmed, had an insurance agency and am now retired. Our children are: Louella (Sproat), Kenneth, Louise (Campbell), Carlene (Griffith), Larry, Thomas, and James. Mary married John Houtz on November 17, 1934. John was a farmer and we lived near Buckeye until retiring in 1985. We now reside in Warren. Our children are: Joyce (Dahiquist), Betty (Parker), Carol Ann (Watkins).
