The information on Larkin's headstone indicates that he was born 26 Apr 1846 which was a Tuesday. As of 23 Feb 2024 no definite source of his birth date has been discovered. The 1850 Census indicates that he was 6 years old, which could make his birthday as early as 1844. His death certificate did not list a birth date, and simply estimated his age, at death, was 'about 77'.

Census records during this time frame indicate that Larkin's father Henry Smith Jr was a farmer. His mother Sydney Smith was a homemaker.

Bit of info about Larkin's service in the Confederate States of America military. He enlisted 4 June 1864. Seventy-second regiment, Company C. "Basic training" at Camp Vance, Morganton, North Carolina. Along with a number of other regiments, they were called Junior Reserves due to their young age.

On Sunday 14 October 1866, he and Mary Polly Griffin were married. According to the 1870 Census, he followed his father's footsteps. He became a farmer and his wife kept house.

Larkin and Mary were the parents to 12 children. 8 boys and 4 girls.

Sadly, on Saturday 24 February 1900 Mary passed away.

Larkin Smith married his cousin Mary Magdalene Smith on 08 December 1903. Mary Magdalene Smith was the daughter of George Adam Smith and Jemima L. Bean.

Larkin and his second wife, Mary M Smith were the parents of 1 boy named Arvin Odell Smith.

Unfortunately, once again, Larkin experienced the loss of a wife. Mary Magdalene Smith passed away on Thursday 26 February 1920. Larkin followed her in death on 29 May 1922

Special Notes:

The Inscription on his headstone does not agree with the majority of documents available. The first name is spelled with and 'i' instead of an 'e'.

Many have attempted to 'give' Larkin a middle name, including Jones or James. The majority of his sources list 'J' as his middle initial, no middle name.
