Neal H. Smith, 83, a lifelong resident of Dixmont, died Jan. 4, 1988 at a Pittsfield hospital after a long illness. He was born in Dixmont, April 18, 1904, son of Herbert and Lida (Mitchell) Smith. He was educated in Dixmont schools.

Mr. Smith was a self-employed dairy farmer in Dixmont. He also worked for the Elm City Creamery in Detroit for 10 years and for the State of Maine in road maintenance for several years. He was a school bus driver for the Dixmont school department for many years.

He attended the Dixmont Corner Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace (Tasker) Smith of Dixmont; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Margaret) Turner of Hermon, Mrs. Alan (Dorothy) Gower of Dexter, Mrs. Alton (Cheryl) Cutler of Orono; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; several cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Eleanor Carney, who died in 1961.

Funeral services will be conducted at Brown Funeral Home in Newport with Rev. William Stone officiating. Spring interment will be in Sawyer Cemetery in Plymouth.
