Wilfred enlisted April 5, 1864 at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County) for 3 years. Height: 5 ft. 7 in. Complexion: Light. Eyes: Blue. Hair: Light. Born: Hiram, OH(Portage County). Occupation: Farmer.
He was in the 103rd Regiment, Company C.
He was transferred to Company H, 183rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, June 12, 1865. He was mustered out of the 183rd July 17, 1865.(Source: Descriptive Book of the the 103rd Regiment, National Archives). His age is shown as 18 at enlistment.

(The 103rd was recruited and organized in July and August of 1862 to serve for 3 years. Wilfred did not enlist until 1864. Since the 103rd was mustered out June 12, 1865 at the end of the war, Wilfred, and others who had enlisted in 1864, were transferred to the 183rd. Since the war had ended the 183rd as a unit was mustered out about a month later as the troops were not longer needed.)

He filed for an army invalid pension Aug. 9, 1894 in Indiana. His widow, Mary, filed for an army widow's pension benefit, May 23, 1927. Both pensions were granted.

Some interesting additional information shows that in the 1890 U.S. Veterans Schedule Census Wilfred was shown living in the Chattanooga TN(also called Hamilton District 6) area with a Post Office of Sherman Hts. By 1900 he is shown living in Vincennes, Indiana through 1920. He has a State of Ohio Death Certificate(#29160) verifying that he died May 13, 1924 in Cincinnati, OH of heart dialation and liver cancer. He died at 239 Albion Place and that his residence was Vincennes, IN. He wife was Mary, nee Reckner.

Census returns show that he was an architect by profession. In Chattanooga he was listed as being with a concern called Blatherwick & Penn, which was probably an architectural company.

There is a post-war photograph of him in the Company C frame in Casement Hall at the 103rd O.V.I. Grounds in Sheffield Lake, OH.

Lastly, Wilfred's name is on Panel #15 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. See www.soldiersandsailors.com to learn more about the monument and its recent rennovation.
