In Bristol Indiana, June 19th 1877 after a long lingering illness, Mr. Solomon Fowler aged 67 yrs 11 mos. 14 days died. Funeral June 20 at 4:00pm. Service by Rev. J. Maffel. The funeral was conducted by the Masonic Fraternity of which he was a member. A large concourse of friends followed the inanimate form of him whom all in life so highly honored, to his last resting place in the Episcopal Church Cemetery, thereby paying the last sad tribute respect to him whom all had loved.
Solomon Fowler was born in Putnam, Co. State of New York, July 5, 1809. After working on a farm at the place of his home for a few years, he came to New York City and engaged in the grocery business. Then he became associated with Henry Coffin in the oil trade. In 1836 he came to Indiana and located in Bristol in the general merchandise business with Owen Coffin. We find him next with A.K. Kline and William Probasco, in merchandising and while pursing the business of merchant he was one of the principle partners in building Bristol steam flouring mills. After carrying on the business of Miller successfully for some years, he engaged as the principal in forming the Bristol Hydraulic Co. of which he was president, and one of its directors until fire destroyed the works.
As a citizen his whole life was characterized by morality liberality and integrity. As a merchant his career was distinguished by honesty and perseverance in doing right and never lost the honor of a gentleman to accomplish an end. As an associated in all the varied relations of life and business his word was his fond, in the town of Bristol is indebted to him in great degree for tits present position. A public spirited citizen in every way that went to elevate the town. We now can see what his work was only when he has left us.
No man in our community has done more for our town. No man ever lived here possessing so many attributes that goes to distinguish the high minded merchant, citizen and friends as Solomon Fowler. We will miss him in our every day avocation, and when we point to the buildings erected by his controlling hand. Houses, stores, mills and waterworks. We must give him the honor, that take him in all his like is seldom seen.
