Dollie was a well known and well-loved wife, mother and neighbor. Roy and Dollie moved their young family from Terre Haute to Indianapolis in the 1930s. Her church, Calvary United Brethren in Indianapolis, was central to her. She had 12 children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. One of the saddest family memories came when Roy and Dollie lost their son Roy who died at the age of 13. He was struck with appendicitis and was given anesthesia for surgery. He died and the family understood that Roy,Jr apparently was allergic to the drug used. Dollie's husband Roy, was a lay preacher and would fill in at churches when they lived in the Terre Haute area. Dollie had her children in church Sunday morning, evening, on Wednesdays and at every revival service. She was only 4'9" tall but kept even her rowdy boys in line. Dollie was struck at 54 with kidney cancer and lived three more years. She died as she lived, while helping her beloved family and friends.
