Leonard W. Botkin
Leonard William Botkin, 83, of 1814 Dearborn St., long-time Caldwell druggist died at a local hospital early Thursday following his second stroke on Wednesday. He had been in ell health since suffering a stroke in January during a visit in Honolulu.
Mr. Botkin was born July 3, 1875, in Atchison County, Mo., and attended county schools there until the family moved to Tarkio, Mo., where he attended Tarkio College. In the spring of 1898 he made a visit to Seattle, Port Townsend and Port Angeles, Wash., and stopped over to visit relatives at Pocatello, Idaho and remained in Idaho moving with them to Challis where he worked in a drug store until 1900. He then moved to Silver City where he purchased moving with them to Challis where he worked in a drug store until 1900. He then moved to Silver City where he purchased his first drug store. In the fall of 1903 he came to Caldwell and purchased a drug store from Dr. Frank Isham, a pioneer Caldwell physician. In 1905 he, with Judge Hon Rice, erected a small building consisting of two rooms and moved their businesses to this new location. When the Union block was built at the corner of Kimball and Arthur streets, he again moved to the present location of the Pennywise Drug Store where he remained until his retirement in March of 1948, after having been in the drug business for over 50 years. During these years he was associated with L. A. Harmon, H. T. Blake, Charles Joy Drug Co., Wayne Gordon and Nelle B. Frost. He married Katherine Lyman on June 14, 1911, at Boise. Mr. (B)otkin was a charter member of the Caldwell Elk Lodge, the Rotary Club and was a member of the Silver City IOOF Lodge from 1900-1903, and of the Caldwell Lodge since that time, and a member of the Boone Memorial church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katherine Botkin and a daughter, Miss Gratia Botkin, both of Caldwell; a sister, Mrs. Louise Stephenson of Sioux City, Iowa.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Peckham-Dakan-Davis Chapel with Dr. C. Warren Van Camp officiating. Interment will be in Canyon Hill Cemetery.
The family requests that any memorials be given for new administration building fund for the Boone Memorial Presbyterian Church
