Obituary
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Melancon Funeral Home Chapel for Helen Sharp, the former Helen Cormier.

Monsignor Louis Melancon will conduct the services.

Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park.

Musical selections will be Here I am, Lord, Amazing Grace, Hail Mary, Gentle Woman and How Great Thou Art, and will be performed by Sharee D. Hunter.

Helen Cormier Sharp was born to J.C. and Alida Breaux Cormier in Port Barre, La. on December 13th, 1913, and departed this world on Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. at Prompt Succor Nursing Facility.

She was the eldest of three daughters, and graduated from high school in Port Barre, La. then graduated from Normal College in Natchitoches, La. (now called Northwestern State), with a Teaching Certificate in the l930s. In the 1950's she attended S.L.I. (now U.L.) and received her bachelor's degree in teaching. She taught fourth grade in schools in St. Landry Parish including Market Street Elementary, Park Vista Elementary and Creswell Elementary for 32 years, retiring in 1975. She is fondly remembered by many of her students. It has been said many times that she always said the right thing to make people feel better about themselves.

She married Jack Sharp, a Texan, in January 1934, and they enjoyed 67 years of wedded bliss. She loved entertaining her family and friends. She loved working in her flower garden, and was an avid bridge player. She loved to bake and loved to travel. .

She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. She was a beautiful and talented lady. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and a dear friend to many.

She is survived by a son, J.C.Sharp of Lafayette, and special friend, Wanda Simoneaux, a daughter, Jackie S. Griffin and her husband, Richard, of Opelousas. Her most precious treasures were her four grandchildren and their families. Cyndi Nezat Vidrine & Tony Vidrine, R. Steven Nezat and Amy Saucier Nezat, all of Opelousas, Jeannene S. Duhon and Cornell Duhon, of Canton, Ga. and Brad A. Nezat and Dena Landry Nezat of Prarieville, La. She is also survived by seven very special great-grand children, Amanda Vidrine of Ruston, Nicholas Sharp Vidrine and Carmin Nezat of Opelousas, Tory and Gavin Duhon of Canton, Georgia and Chelsea and Amber Nezat,of Prarieville, La.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Sharp, parents J.C. and Alida Cormier, her sisters, Bernice C. Bergeron and Patricia C. Vidrine, a daughter-in-law, Norma Ortego Sharp, and an infant son, Andrew Sharp.

The Pallbearers will be Tony Vidrine, Brad Nezat, Steven Nezat, Nick Vidrine, Kenneth Bergeron, and Paul Bergeron.

Funeral Arrangements was entrusted to Melancon Funeral Home of Opelousas 4708 I-49 N. Service Rd.
