Samuel J Gillem was born in North Carolina in 1800, moved to Tennessee when he was a young man and settled near Gainesboro, Jackson county. He was a hatter by trade and was so engaged when his wife died about 1840. Some 4 or 5 years later, he married Miss Rutha Harper of Martin Creek, Putnam county, and moved to her farm there, where he died February 17, 1875. He is buried near Bloomington Springs.
