Sarah Hughes was a daughter of John Missouri Burleson & Sarah Holcomb Burleson. Photos of Sarah, along with her brothers, sisters, and family are in the photo section of this Memorial. She married John L Hughes in Grayson County Texas on May 1, 1870, and they later migrated by wagon with their children to near Altus, Oklahoma. In 1937, she described her early pioneer life in Oklahoma for a University of Oklahoma Project that documented accounts of early Oklahoma pioneers--her interesting account is transcribed in the photo section of this Memorial, and the original can be found in the University's pioneer records. Simple search the internet for:
Indian-Pioneer Papers Collection (ou.edu), and then search this collection of 11,000 pioneer stories, by the name or town of interest, such as "Hughes".

Pioneer Woman Dies Today -- Altus Times Democrat, April 28, 1938.
Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the family residence at 311 East Walnut Street for Mrs. Sarah K. Hughes, age 84 years. The aged Jackson county pioneer died at the family home in Altus at 12:15 p.m. today following an illness of the past three months. The rites will be conducted by Elder W. N. Green, pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church of Altus. Burial will be made in the Martha, Oklahoma cemetery, (buried by her husband). Mr. and Mrs. Hughes moved to this section of the country in 1888, settling in the Martha community, where they homesteaded a tract of land. Mr. Hughes died in 1919. Surviving Mrs. Hughes are the following sons and daughters, William David Hughes of Granite, Oklahoma; John Claude Hughes of Tucson, Arizona; John Garland Hughes and Lannie E. Hughes of Altus, Oklahoma; Mrs. Luella (James Clint) Jenkins of Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Nina (Morgan) Stallings of Headrick, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Alga (R. N.) Colyar of Altus, Oklahoma.
