DIED
In Harmony, Rock County, on the 2d inst.,
SAMUEL W. St JOHN, of Columbus, Co-
lumbia County, in the 53d year of his age.
Mr. St John was one of the earliest settlers
of the County of Rock, and with other hardy,
industrious, and enterprising pioneers, encoun-
tered the numerous difficulties connected with
the settlement of a new country. When this
? ? inhabitant erected his "log cabin" in
the section of Rock River valley, the county
was a wilderness, so far as prairie region could
be termed such, before the art of the cultivator
had transformed it into fruitful fields. The red
men were at that time traversing our streams
with their light canoes, and wandering careles-
ly and unconcerned through our groves, and
? ? ? delightful, though unculti-
vated practices. Now, how changed the scene!
An extensive and thriving white population is
here---with splendid farms, flourishing villages,
Printing Offices, schools, churches, and numer-
ous other advantages and privileges of civilized
Life.
For a few years past, Mr. S. has resided at
Columbus where his family still remain. Be-
Ing in this vicinity on business, he was violent-
ly attacked with a disease that resulted in death.
