Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Willson Mattox of Brightview at Baldwin Park died peacefully at her home on Dec. 12, 2010. She was born Jan. 9, 1936, in Staunton, the only daughter of Emory Reese and Dorothy Mercereau Willson of Staunton and enjoyed her life growing up on East Beverly Street.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Emory Reese Willson II and Percy Hunt Willson II and his wife, Jane Bailey Willson; and a daughter, Mary Sue McAllister Smith.

Betty was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and attended business college in Staunton. She previously worked at the Virginia Highway Department in Richmond. She was employed afterward at the Hogsheads Drugstore, which her family owned, in downtown Staunton, followed by employment at Dominion Business School as an office manager. She became a legislative aide to the General Assembly for the Honorable Sen. Emmet Hanger and later became a tour guide and "flower lady" at the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace. She was a member of Augusta Garden Club and the Garden Club of Virginia and was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church and its altar guild.

Survivors include her brother, Edward Mercereau Willson and his wife, Mary B. Willson, of Georgia; her lifelong friend and former husband, Alvah Stone Mattox Jr. and his wife, Susan Richards Mattox, of Weyers Cave; her daughter, Dorothy Mattox Baxley and her husband, Daniel C. Baxley Jr. of Staunton; her granddaughter, K. Elizabeth "Liz" Baxley; grandsons, William Kenly McAllister Jr. and Willson Edward Baxley, all of Staunton; granddaughter, Mary Scot McAllister Boyce and her husband, Matthew R. Boyce, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son-in-law, David Smith of Nellysford; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, followed by a graveside service at Thornrose Cemetery, 1041 W. Beverley St., Staunton, by the Revs. Paul Nancarrow and John Lane.

The family will receive friends following the burial at Henry Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Carillion Family Medicine in Staunton and most especially Dr. Leon Lenker, Betty's primary physician for more than 25 years, for the quality love, care and support they have provided her for many years, and a special thanks to Dr. John Zadrozny for his expertise, love and support as well. They also offer a very special thank you to the nurses, staff and residents of Brightview at Baldwin Park for their care, love and companionship they have given to Betty and the family over the past four years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Percy Willson Pharmacy at Augusta Regional Free Clinic, PO Box 153, Fishersville, VA 22939; the Trinity Episcopal Church Altar Guild; or Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
