He was born in Wythe County, December 12, 1837, the son of the late William H. Brown and Isabella C. Crockett. On November 29, 1864 in Wythe County, he married Sarah C. Umbarger, daughter of Solomon Umbarger and Alpha Kegley.
Robert was the oldest of 6 siblings – 4 girls and 2 boys; only a brother, William Henry Corvin survives.
Mr. Brown was a Confederate soldier, having joined Company A. 4th Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade. After serving 4 years, he was discharged in November 1864 after being badly wounded in his arms and legs at Mine Run (Orange Co., VA).
The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon from St. John's Lutheran church and the interment was in the cemetery at that place.
