Jonathon was the eldest son of Samuel and Rachel (Newman) Phillips, he resides on the southeast quarter of section 5, in Clay Township. His farm contains 125 acres of valuable land located in section 4 & 5.
Jonathan remained with his parents utill July 1863,(age 23) when he enlisted in the 117th Indiana Infantry for six months. He was discharged after a service and in February 1865 he enlisted again in Company B of the 148th Indiana Infantry and stayed until the close of the war.
He married MAKINA COUCH March 23, 1865.
