John (Jack) Hatten was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Bancroft, Iowa, to Frank and Gertrude Hatten. He received his education at St. John's Catholic School in Bancroft.

On July 12, 1961, John was united in marriage to JoAnn Lensing of Bancroft. To this union, they were blessed with five daughters: Lisa, Lori, Julie, Angie and Mari Beth. Their early marriage years were spent in Bancroft until John joined Gambles and moved to Carroll, Perry, Spencer, Centerville and back to Spencer in 1977.
