Vester W. Belongia, 90, Oconto, died Sunday morning, June 6, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center, Green Bay. Vester Wesley Belongia was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Oconto, the son of John and Josephine (Zobeck) Belongia.

He married Gertrude "Gert" Scott Sept. 27, 1941, in St. Edward Catholic Church at Ashland, Ohio. Vester was a cook in the United States Army during World War II and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

He worked at various factories during his life and retired from American Motors in Kenosha.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Oconto, Machickanee American Legion Post #523 and was an Honorary Member of St. Ann's Society.

He enjoyed fishing and was known as the "Smelt King," and loved hunting and bingo.

Surviving are his loving wife of almost 63 years, Gert; a granddaughter and her husband and their daughter; a brother, Wilton Belongia, Oconto; sisters, Pearl Bauers, Kenosha, Gen (Conrad) Sylvester, Suamico, Dolores Kaster, Green Bay, and Faye Schultz, Rochester, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

Vester was preceded in death by his daughter, Annette Tiegs; a great-granddaughter, Randi Jo Brempell; his parents; brothers, John Belongia, Jr., Earl Belongia and Edward Belongia; and sisters, Violet McGrath and Myrtle Larson.

Family and friends may visit at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004. St. Ann's Society Rosary 4 p.m. and Parish Vigil Service 7 p.m. Funeral Liturgy 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Church with the Rev. Fr. David Ruby officiating. Interment at Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the Cemetery.
