The last battle that Joseph Pedigo Kelley fought in was the Battle of Seven Pines. Although some believe that he was wounded in that battle, no record has been found to verify that. The story told by the Kelley family is that because the soldiers had poor or no rations, they ate anything they could find. Joseph supposedly became ill from eating green corn and green apples and developed diarrhea/dysentery. Following the Battle of Seven Pines, he was hospitalized at the Staunton Hospital, between 26 June 1862 and 31 October 1862, when he went home to Floyd County on sick furlough and died on 14 Dec 1862 at the age of 33. His widow, Sarah Catherine Payne, was left with six young children: Sarah Elizabeth, 10; George Lewis, 8; Homer Hansford, 5; John Benjamin, 4; Jefferson Lafayette, 2; and James Marion, 1 year old. The location of Joseph's grave has never been found. He may be buried at Round Top Cemetery, Floyd County. It is known by people living in the area and by the family that his father, George Washington Kelley, and his brother, James L. Kelley, are buried at Round Top. Their graves are poorly marked with old slate stones whose inscriptions have worn away many years ago.
