Louis' Lutheran confirmation was performed at Newark, Kendall County, Illinois. Coming to Minnesota, where a half-brother lived, Louis worked as a finish carpenter in Minneapolis where he met his future wife Rose Osman who was working there as a domestic. After they married, he made a tree claim for land farmed at Lehr, Logan county, North Dakota from about 1905 to 1914. As published in the Wishek (ND) News on 27 Jun 1906, the homestead description: S1/2 of NE1/4, and SE1/4 of NW1/4 and Lot 2 of Section 18 in Twp 134N Range 68W.
Later, they sold the claim and moved back to Minnesota often commuting between Walnut Grove and Minneapolis, where he again worked as a finish carpenter, in the Kenwood and Lowry Hill areas .
