Brinkerhoff was born in Jersey City, N.J. in 1812, the son of Hartman Brinkerhoff and Eleanor Clendenny. He married married Hannah Van Houten Tice on August 2, 1832 in Jersey City. Brinkerhoff became Common Pleas Judge in Hudson County. Later he became the Director of the Board of Freeholders of Hudson County. His son William, became a New Jersey state senator in 1884. His daughter Eleanor married George Bragg Fielder who became a U.S. Congressman in 1893. His grandson, James F. Fielder would become the 35th Governor of New Jersey. His other son, Henry H. married Elizabeth Vreeland. John Van Wagenen Brinkerhoff died in Jersey City, at age 78.
