Nils was the oldest son of Elias Nilssen and Anne Kjeldsdatter Bakken. Nils spent several years in America in the 1890s returning to Norway in the early 1900s. He first went to Stephen, Minnesota where his sister Karine was living and then followed her to Presho, South Dakota where he spent time delivering mail. After returning to Norway he married Martine and bought the farm Høyland near Konsmo, Vest Agder. Nils and Martine raised five children.
