- SAVANNAH, GA. - Carla S. Chambers, age 83, was called to eternal rest to be with her Lord and Savior on the evening of Sunday, December 5, 2010, after a ten year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Carla was born in Evans County, Georgia and lived the majority of her life in Savannah. She was retired from Union Camp Corporation where she worked in the Woodlands Division as a Buyer/Purchasing Agent. Up until her illness, she was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church participating in the Crusader's Sunday School Class, the Lydia Circle of United Methodist Women, and the Christian Women's Society. Carla was an amazing mother and a humorous, bright, and beautiful lady. Although her illness took away her ability to move or communicate, she continued displaying her faith, grace, courage, and 'quiet strength' that left an indelible mark on many. The following survivors are honored to continue her legacy: her three children (all of Savannah): Chip Chambers, III (Annie); Caren Lee (Walter); Allison Griffin (Christopher); six grandchildren: Chip Chambers, IV (Melissa), Robbie Chambers, Tori Chambers, Phillip Lee, Trey Barry, and Maggie Griffin; daughter in-law, Ruthie Chambers; two great grandchildren, Conner and Quinn Chambers and several nieces and nephews. Carla is also survived by her brother, Louis Bouchelle (Elaine); sister, Virginia Parrack; sisters in-law: Peggy Chambers Cole and Mary Smith; and her dear aunt, Colleen Robinette. Carla's husband of 29 years, Forrest M. (Woody) Chambers, Jr., her brother, Jimmy Smith, and her sister, Jocelyn Thomas preceded her in death along with her parents. The Chambers family would like to express gratitude to Carla's many physicians and the loving caregivers of Azalealand Nursing Home, Savannah Cottages, and Hospice Savannah who were part of this journey having provided compassionate care, love and support. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening (December 7) from 5-7 p.m. at Fairhaven Funeral Home on 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive. Carla's funeral service will be held on Wednesday (December 8) at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Enoch Hendry (longtime family friend and minister of Trinity United Methodist Church) officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406. Fairhaven Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel 912-927-1999 Savannah, Georgia.
