Big John was a "gentle Ben" and a friend to all. He loved Moon Pies and RC Colas.
He never married and lived in his parents old home until his death. He always wore overalls and a hat.

When he came home one evening two men were waiting for him inside. They had ransacked his house searching for money as it was believed that Big John had lots of money hidden away. They beat him up and struck him on the head and left him lying in the snow in freezing temperatures. He wasn't found until the next morning when he didn't show up at his usual place, and someone went to look for him.

It was too late, as he had died during the night. He suffered massive cranial hemorrhage, multiple blows and lacerations to scalp, fracture of jaw and massive blows to body.

The men were caught and one of them died while in prison.
