Virgil Markham (1899-1973) was the son of well-known poet Edwin Markham who wrote many poems and books, but is probably best remembered for "Man with a Hoe". Virgil some would say lived in the shadow of his father and after Edwin Markham died in 1940, tended to his father's literary legacy. His mother Anna Catherine (Murphy) Markham was also a poet, but lesser known than her husband. His parents were middle-aged when he was born and always involved in a variety of projects including travelling to study Indians in South America in 1900 when Virgil was still a baby. They later settled in Staten Island, New York.

Virgil Markham was a well-educated man. He attained a B.A. from Columbia University and an an M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, where he would later teach for a period of time. His writing niche was writing mysteries and teaching the techniques for mystery writing. He wrote an historical novel entitled "The Scamp" as well as several other mystery novels set in Europe.
