Alfred "Al" W. Harriger, 91, of Brookville, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Jefferson Manor.

Born August 24, 1919 in Knox Township, a son of the late William "Buff" and Katherine (Troutman) Harriger.

On September 23, 1941, he married the former Dorothy C. Rhodes. She survives.

He was a member of the United States Army during World War II, serving in central Europe, where he earned the Theatre Service Medal with one bronze star, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookville, the Hobah Masonic Lodge #276, the Blue Lodge, and the Coudersport Consistory. Al worked as a district foreman for National Fuel, retiring after forty four years of service in 1982. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, gardening, wood cutting, making trails, and singing. He was a former member of the New Bethlehem Chorus.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Cary W. (Shannon) Harriger of Lubbock, TX, and Margaret J. (Donald) Gorscak of Bethal Park, PA; Seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and three great – great grandchildren; two brothers, Roy (Evelyn) Harriger of OH, and Harold (Jane) Harriger of Lubbock, TX; three sisters, Melissa "Betty" Brosius and Donna Brush, both of Brookville, and Phyllis (Howard) Reinard of Knoxdale.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Franklin, William "Lu", and Col. Russell Harriger; sisters, Ann Whitehill, Margaret and Patricia Harriger, and Joleen Mitchell.

Friends will be received from 2 – 3 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2010 at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Brookville. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. officiated by Reverend Mick Chittester.

Interment will be in Harriger Cemetery, Knox Twp., Jefferson County. Memorial donations may be made in Al's memory to the DRMC Heart Center, 100 Hospital Ave., DuBois, PA 15801 or the First United Methodist Church, Jefferson Street, Brookville, PA 15825.
