Former Sheridan resident Abel Sanchez Benavides, 78, of San Antonio died Jan. 20, 2008, in San Antonio. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Arturo Pestin officiating. Burial will be in Fort Stockton Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are with Memorial Funeral Home of Fort Stockton, Texas. Mr. Benavides was born April 10, 1929, in Fort Stockton to Juan Ramirez Benavides and Rosa Sanchez. He moved to Sheridan in 1965. He married Judith LaNell Powell on Oct. 19, 1967, in Sheridan. The family lived here until 1995, when they moved to San Antonio. Mr. Benavides was an Army veteran and member of the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by a son, Tomas; three brothers, Bartolo, Manuel and Jose; and two sisters, Cuca Benavides and Irene Gonzales. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Loretta Stephenson of Fort Stockton and Raquel Dietrich of Cheyenne; a brother, Antonio Benavides Sr. of Fort Stockton; a sister, Anita Davis of California; and four grandchildren
