Asher Fairchild Barnes, the son of Elisha Barnes and Lucy Jones, was born and raised at Middletown, Connecticut, where he met Elizabeth Adelaide Scoville. Adelaide, as she was called, was the eldest of the eight children of William Scoville and Elizabeth Pratt. The Scoville family moved from Old Saybrook, where Adelaide had been born, to Middletown in the 1820s. When William Scoville moved his family to Ashtabula, Ohio, Asher and Adelaide were married there. Lucy Adelaide Barnes, the first of their eight children, was born at Ashtabula in May 1832. Asher and Adelaide returned to Middletown, where he was listed as the head a household in the 1840 census. After Asher's father died in 1841, Asher and Adelaide left Connecticut and moved to Clarksburg. Adelaide died in 1872, aged 60. Two years later, Asher had met a young widow named Carrie (Abbott) Wickes. Carrie Abbot had married Benjamin Wickes in 1865. Benjamin had served in the same unit during the Civil War as did Asher's son Ethelbert Barnes. Wicks had died of consumption in 1871, leaving Carrie a widow at age 30 with a four year old son. Asher and Carrie married in 1874. Over the next six years, all but one of the children of Asher and Adelaide left their father's home, so in 1880 his household consisted of himself, his wife, his youngest daughter and his stepson. Ten years later, Asher Barnes died of cancer at the age of 80. Carrie Barnes remained his widow for another 37 years, until her death from pneumonia in 1927.
