HICKMAN, G. W.
1827 3 Oct 1910
Woodland Polk age 83;
----------------
George Washington Hickman was born to Jesse Washington Hickman,born 1795 Franklin, Va.-died 26 Jan.1866,in Covington Fountain, Ind. and Priscilla Dewitt, born in 1795 Ohio, and died 12 Sept, 1843 in Covington Fountain, Ind. George married Mary Ann Booe 17 Sept., 1846 in Fountain, Ind. She was born 31 Jan. 1829 Ind. and died 4 Jan., 1893 Des Moinies, Ia.

Their children were: Alonzo abt 1849-unknown; Philip A. abt 1851 who became a farmer; Helen Hickman Knutz 1854; Eva M. Hickman Stradley 1857; Laura 1861; Edgar Theodure, fruit grower (FAG #14424590 listed as Theodure & buried in Bl. 10 Lot 154) 1863-Jun.,1951; Ida (FAG 1442454810 buried in Bl. 10 Lot 154); Ada or Addie L. (FAG 1442454575 and buried in Bl 10 Lot 154) 1866-Jan., 1876 (perhaps Ida and Ada were twins); and Elizabeth 1869-unknown. This following segment was in "The History of Polk County, Iowa" by the Union Historical Company: "Hickman, G. W.--Farmer, fruit-raiser and brick-maker. Was born in Indiana, December 8, 1826, and was raised on a farm. June 1, 1848 he came to this county and is now the owner of a farm of ninety acres, improved, which he entered from the government." (I saw his Civil War registration, but not other information. However, I assume this last statement refers to land given to solders following their service committment since it said "from the government".) "He has an orchard comprising 2,000 trees and bears the reputation of being one of the best fruit raisers in the county. He has an apiary of thirty-four hives and devotes considerable attention to this business. In the spring of 1870 he first started the brick business and is quite extensively engaged in it. His marriage was in Indiana, Septemter 17, 1846, to Miss Mary A. Booe," (daughter of Peter Dewitt 1807-1828 and Mercy Mary Massie 1756-1828). "They had five children: Philip A.,Sarah H., Eva M., Laura S., Edgar T. and Rose. Mr. H.is one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the county..." the article cut off here. None of the family in Block 19 Lot 154 have gravestones. Mary Ann Hickman is also buried there along w/ several children.
