William was born in County Cork, Ireland. He settled in Ballville in 1833 when the township had only 26 voters in it. He blazed the trail that was later to become Morrison Road (now County Road 53). William and Hannah built fires at night and hung blankets at the doors when the cries of the wolf re-echoed through the woods.

William and Hannah had children: Thomas, William, John, Maurice, Margaret, and Ellen.

War of 1812 service: Army Private; Capt. David Peck's co., Enlisted 25 Aug 1812, discharged 28 Feb 1813, Jefferson Co. (Source: Military file, Office of Soldiers & Sailors relief, Sandusky Co. Courthouse, Fremont, OH, Ohio Roster, Page 9)

Their son, Maurice, enlisted in the Union Army on April 24, 1861 for three months. He reenlisted on June 5, 1861 for three years. He served in Company G, 8th Regiment of the OVI. He was home on furlough in October 1861. In November 1861 he became ill and died of fever in Cumberland, Maryland on December 9, 1861. He was twenty six years old and a second sergeant at the time of his death.
