William Hamilton Moore, born in Northern Ireland, came to America at the age of 15, in 1739. His Mother came over two years later with her youngest son. His Father and Grandfather had died fighting in the Irish War between Catholics and Protestants.
He was a Captain, serving in the Revolutionary War, (Rowan County, North Carolina Militia in Indian skirmishes). He served under General Rutherford, his brother-in-law.

Daughters of America Colonists have erected a sign on Sand Hill Road in Buncombe County, North Carolina "Home Place of Captain William Hamilton Moore". Here on land grant #1031 granted in 1787, he erected the first blockhouse-fort of white settlers west of the Blue Ridge. Captain Moore and his troops camped on an expedition against Cherokee Indians.
The Marker was erected by William Hamilton Moore, ggg grandson, Daniel Killian Moore, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1965 - 1969.
