His father was William Willis Magee of North Carolina. His mother may have been Mary A. Luter.

An obituary that was printed in a south Mississippi newspaper in 1881:
MAGEE--At his late residence, near Johnston Station, Ransom Magee, in the 61st year of his age.
As each day passes we are called upon to record the death of some of our old citizens. The death of Mr. Magee was not unexpected as he had been in failing health for some time past; yet when the messenger came we were none the less shocked that one of our oldest citizens should be chosen. Born in this county and residing here since his birth, he was identified with its interests, emphatically a good citizen, an upright man, the loss of whom must be felt by all. We tender our sincerest condolence to the immediate family of the deceased, and we know that his pure spirit has crossed the dark river to inhabit that bourne from whence no traveler returns.
