Inscription

Joint table-top:

Here lies Interr'd the Body of
Deacon Daniel Brainerd who
Died Febr'y the 28th 1743
in the 77th Year of his Age.

Here lies Interr'd the Body of
Mrs. Sufanna the widow of
Deacon Daniel Brainerd and lyeths
at his right hand fhe died Janr'y 26th
1754 in the 86th Year of her Age.

Under the assumption that the joint table-top memorial was erected after the death in 1754 of wife Susanna (i.e., after the 1751 adoption of the Gregorian calendar), and that Daniel's stated year of death is based on the Gregorian calendar, Dea. Daniel Brainerd, Jr.'s inscription means that on the day he died he was then 76 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 77. This means he was born AFTER Jan. 26, 1665/6 and that the full date of his partially incomplete date of birth in the printed Haddam Vital Records is "Mar. 2, 16[65/6]". As Daniel was the first child of his parents, this further infers that his parents, Dea. Daniel Brainerd, Sr. and Hannah Spencer probably married in the year 1665, not in some earlier year.

Mrs. Susanna (Ventres) Brainerd's inscription means that on the day she died she was then 85 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 86, further indicating that she was born AFTER Jan. 26, 1667/8.
