Long time Burley resident, Saul C. Saldana, age 79, died at home on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, as a result of a stroke and fall which occurred on July 14, 2009, in Pocatello, Idaho.
He was born on May 16, 1931, in Crystal City, Texas, to Francisco Mendoza Saldana and Eva Galvan Chapa.
Saul spent most of his young life in Uvalde, Texas, where his father built a home for the family. At the age of eleven he left school to help support the family by working with his migrant parents in the fall harvests picking cotton, apples, peaches, cherries, potatoes and thinning and hoeing beets.
On Dec. 28, 1949, he married Pompella Hernandez in Del Rio, Texas, and together they raised seven children. Prior residences for the family include: Casa Grande, Arizona; Uvalde, Texas; and Imperial, Calif.
In 1961, Saul moved his family to Burley, Idaho, to be near his parents and siblings. Shortly after the move, he was employed by Ore-Ida Foods Inc. as a lineman and was promoted, a few years later, to foreman.
In 1965, he became a Christian and eventually a Deacon for the 1st Assembly of God church in Burley. Later, he received his credentials and became an ordained Minister of the Gospel.
In 1973, Saul won a seat on the Cassia County School District Board by running as a write-in candidate, becoming the first Hispanic to ever serve on the school board. During his time of service, the district built not one, but two new schools. They are Mountain View Elementary and the Burley Junior High.
During his lifetime, Saul served on many community and religious committees, often with his wife, Pompella, at his side. Together, Saul and Pompella started churches in Aberdeen, Glenns Ferry and Paul, Idaho. From those three churches, another five have now been built and owe their existence in part, due to Saul and Pompella's hard work.
Over the years, Saul was actively involved in serving the spiritual and physical needs of the community. He performed thousands of marriage ceremonies, christenings and baptisms in the Mini-Cassia area. On countless occasions, he collected clothing and food for the local shelter. A kind and caring man, Saul saw suffering and did his best to make a difference for those in need, even when doing so was to his own detriment.
In April of 1985, at the age of 54, Saul suffered a nearly fatal heart attack. However, with the love and care of his family, he recovered enough to return to work until his retirement in 1992. He was employed by Ore-Ida Foods for 24 years.
Saul is survived by his wife, Pompella; daughter, Sylvia (Charles) Tracy; and sons, Richard, Ruben, Jamie (Na' Keya), and Jamie Daniel Saldana. His siblings are Abel (Ethel) Saldana, Adolf (Leicha) Saldana, Frank (Lois) Saldana, Eva, Adam and Rosie Saldana. Saul has eight grandchildren: Jason, Lesha, Takisha, Pamela, Anastasia, Kyra, Danny and Sharlene.
Saul was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Florencio (Frez); his sister, Maria; a son, Saul Jr.; and a grand-daughter, Ayasha.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to honor Saul's memory to: Christian Center Assembly of God, 317 West 27th St., Burley, Idaho; First Baptist Church Overcomers, 2262 Hiland Ave., Burley, Idaho; or a food donation to a needy family or homeless shelter.
