"Robert was born on November 3, 1939 in Murray, and he died the same day. Here is my diary record of the event:

'Mom went to the hospital last night about 2:30 and had a baby boy, but it died about 6:00 today. Gramma (Erickson) came down with Aunt Nell and Lee, Joe and Amy. He lived only about 12 hours. What's the reason we're put on the earth? Trials are, I guess. This is one of them. I didn't go to school. All of mom's sisters came to see her, then we went to the mortuary. The baby looked like he was alive but so still.'

At that time, we had the coffin in our house overnight, like they used to do in the old days. I remember that I stared at baby Robert's body. My eyes played tricks on me, and I imagined that the baby was breathing. It was a terrible memory. Family members visited Mom frequently after Robert's death."

Taken from the autobiography of Barbara Jean Erickson Andersen, "The Story of My Life", a sister.
