From a copy of extractions taken from the Howell County Gazette, sent to me by Gerald Groves, Willow Springs, MO (1998): " March 30, 1899. H. L. Smith died at his home in this city, last night of spinal meningitis, age about 45. He had been in poor health for some time, but he had not been confined until the last two weeks. His death was not unexpected. Funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. Elder Holden will conduct the service." ( His daughter Minnie was 2 years and about 9 months old at the time of her father's death--Carol )
