In 1910 he lived with his uncle, Amandus Hawk, and his family in a house at 210 Second Street in Braddock, PA. He worked as a machinist at the electric works.

In 1920 he and Mabel and their daughter lived with Mabel's parents in a house in New Wilmington, PA. He worked as a laborer in the tin mill.

In 1930 the three of them lived in a house at 209 North Market Street in New Wilmington which they were renting for $100 a month. They had a radio. Walt was the proprietor of a restaurant.

In 1940 he and his wife lived in an apartment they were renting for $45 a month at 323 Orchard Street in New Wilmington. He worked as an assistant janitor at a public school, with an income in 1939 of $810 for 36 weeks of work. She worked as the head cook at a girl's dormitory, with an income in 1939 of $580 for 36 weeks of work.
