Joseph G. Haskins was born in Ozark County, Mo., May 8, 1961, died April 23, 1918, aged 58 years, 11 months and 15 days. He died after an eight-day illness of pneumonia.

He was married to Emma Royle on Aug. 12, 1893. To this union one child was born. She is now Mrs. Stella Austin.

He professed a hope in Christ in 1907, was baptized by Brother Lonna Atkinson, in Big Creek. He lived a true christian life and was devoted to his family and neighbors.

He was serving his second term as Eastern District Judge of Taney County, but had said he would never ask for office again as he wanted to be at home.

His father, Samuel Haskins, died in the Union army at Cassville, Mo., during the Civil War. He was a brother to Rufe, Josiah and Dow Haskins, all Union soldiers in the Civil War. They were in several noted battles, but none of them were shot, altho the ground was covered with dead. All of these brothers are now dead.

After the death of his father, his mother Mary married Elijah Friend. To this union seven children were born. Joseph had one own brother Preston, who died at the age of 3 years.

His mother mary Herd Haskins Friend, died about 38 years ago. She was a sister of John, Andrew, Jessie and Thomas Herd, all deceased. She had one half brother, Steve Copelin, who lives at Protem. She cared for Joseph during his sickness.

Uncle Steve had a divine warning of Joseph's death and Joseph believed it and fixed up his business before he got sick. He was cheerful and as his relatives and friends came into the room he took them by the hand and gave them a good word. He talked up to the last moment and said everything was just as straight as a string.

He leaves a wife, a daughter, one grandson and a host of relatives and friends to mourn. Rev. Shaffer conducted the funeral service and the remains were laid to rest in the Protem Cemetery.

Obituary written by a cousin, Mary F. Johnson.
